🔎About this data

Stores that sell spirits to take home. Where a state's licence class also covers groceries, convenience stores, gas stations and drugstores (CA, FL, WA, MO, NE, ND, WY, DE, IL, MA, KY, AZ), a licence is kept only when its name says liquor, spirits, package store and the like, it is a known liquor chain, or OpenStreetMap or Overture shows a liquor store there. Beer and wine shops, bars and grocery stores are not included. In PA, NC, VA, NH, VT, ME, OH, ID, UT and MT spirits are sold only in state or agency stores, so only those are shown, and many agency stores inside other shops are missing (Ohio, Maine, Vermont). Licence holders' personal names are never shown. Stores marked approximate are at the centre of their ZIP or city (rural-route addresses the geocoder cannot place).

Coverage: Nationwide: 37,603 stores, 103% of the Census Bureau's 2023 count of beer, wine and liquor stores. Official state licence lists cover 15 states and DC in full (NY, TX, CA, FL, CO, CT, OR, WA, MO, OK, ND, NE, WY, MT, DE, DC) and parts of AL, UT, IL (Chicago), MA (Boston), MD (Baltimore City, Anne Arundel), KY (Louisville) and AZ (Pima County): 20,798 stores. Elsewhere OpenStreetMap (6,661) and Overture Maps (10,144), both non-official. Hours for 3,054 stores, websites for 11,936, phones for 18,049. 1,293 stores are placed at their ZIP or city centre (marked approximate).

How it was checked: 25 of 25 sampled stores in NY, TX, CO, CT and OR are still listed at the same address on the state portal, and 113 of 114 sampled stores from the 18 newer official lists match a second lookup at their source. Overture-only stores: 46 of 183 checked on their own websites show the same address or phone (most others are chain or app pages with no address); Overture stores are not added in VA, NH and ME, where none could be confirmed. Totals vs the Census 2023 count are within 0.5-1.6x in 46 states and DC; low in PA 0.38, OH 0.23 and ME 0.08 (only state or agency stores sell spirits there, and Census also counts beer and wine shops), high in UT 2.18 (Census leaves out state-run stores).
